Words and Color

Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr., is a contemporary, legendary letterpress printer based in Detroit, and featured in a new book, Citizen Printer.

We will have the book and examples of his work for inspiration at the workshop.

In this class, attendees will create a screen with words that inspire them, learning the process of creating a design and preparing screens for printing.

They’ll also get to choose from a few different background textures and screen print them as a dramatic backdrop for the words.

Create a visual reminder of a poem, an affirmation, a dream, a feeling or a vibe. What do you want to say?

No prior printing experience is needed. Beginners are welcome!

Grafica Popular

Central to this Taller/workshop is “Grafica Popular” or “popular printmaking,” a twentieth-century popular movement in Mexico in which artists and activists use hand-printed posters to challenge the status quo and raise awareness around socio-political issues of the time.

Outside the constraints of corporate or commercial design, popular printmaking confronts the frequency of digital technologies and the corporate control of visual spaces and allows us to speak our mind through print.

No prior printing experience is needed. Beginners are welcome!

Some students returned to the shop for Open Studio Night (Tuesdays from 5 - 9pm) to continue printing with the screen they made in class, and either brought their own t-shirts to print on or purchased a few blanks from Sunset. We’ll save screens for up to a month when we’ll reclaim them to use again for a new stencil. Or they can be purchased and taken home.

This was our first official printing party, featuring James Makowski printing a CMY sunset and his multi-color magnolia design.

The event also featured Joshua Smith aka Tigermind, who created the wall tattoos; Natalie Ammirato, who designed the gallery wall and store displays; and Torben Umeda aka Stainable Ink, with his upcycled blank shirts and assistance with folks on the one-color press.

James also contributed a larger-than-life handwritten poem for the celebration, and Abe graced us with music from his cello.
